BEN McKELVEY is an amazing UK indie rock singer/songwriter. He has already attracted attention from many established artists. He’s toured with Mike + The Mechanics. Ben is also the official support act for Bruce Springsteen Band’s Jake Clemons.
He spent much of his teenage years playing the drums for punk band Fluid Lines. It looked like he might be on his way to early success when things took a terrible turn for the worse.
Right after he quit the band at age 21 he got really sick. In fact, Ben was so ill he was bedridden. It is times like this when many people find themselves at a fork in the road. Do you fall into deep depression? Or do you take the opportunity to regroup, refocus and re-energize?
Ben chose the latter.
He took this unforeseen downtime to teach himself to play guitar. He also started writing songs. The goal was not for anyone to ever hear any of his early songwriting. Thank goodness, we now get to hear his songs. Ben was drawn to the music of Bruce Springsteen, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Johnny Cash.
As a result, Ben’s music has a purpose. He’s a storyteller. “Wild Child” is not just an upbeat song. It’s a musical journey. It is about freedom, believing in your dreams…and regret. He says, of all the songs he’s written, this one is his favorite.
He says it’s…
“A song based on true events about how being a musician is something you can’t choose to let go when it’s in your blood and how it can destroy personal relationships. A tough song to write but very therapeutic. It was written at a low point in my life but when we get to play it live, it’s just incredible. I guess it’s dedicated to the musicians out there giving it their all.”
