5th PROJEKT “The Pace”

Toronto cinematic art-rock band 5th PROJEKT craft a cinematic art-rock sound with melodic vocals and atmospheric guitars. Bordering on experimental art pop, the female fronted genre-bending band draws inspiration from surf rock, drum and bass and metal.

Multi-instrumentalist Sködt McNalty combines layers of lush, hypnotic fretboard-tapped acoustic guitar and fuzz bass with frantically distressed tremolo guitar, monophonic analog synth, precarious pounding drums and percussion to create intricate syncopated melodies that are held together by the soaring vocal hooks and harmonies of Tara Rice. The project’s newest EP, The Wolf, released on March 7th, 2023, alongside the single “The Pace,” featuring a radio edit (Soundcloud) in addition to the original nearly 9-minute cut (Spotify).

The EP was years in the making, an alchemical process inspired by Rice and McNalty’s weeks-long journey under the Milky Way following ley lines on the Camino Santiago de Compostela. Also called The Way (the title of the EP’s previous single), this walking meditation from the south of France, across northern Spain to the Atlantic Ocean is a mystical initiation that dates back thousands of years.

5th PROJEKT’s previous EP, The Labyrinth (2022) enjoyed 11 weeks on Top 30 college radio charts across Canada making the Top 10 in Guelph and Windsor. The band was featured in the spotlight series on Canadian psychedelia, Psych! on CFUV 101.9FM Victoria, BC, and received accolades as Earshot Distro’s Artist of the Week. Their music has received award nominations from The Ontario Independent Music Awards, The Toronto Independent Music Awards and The Orange County Music Awards.

The band’s captivating live presence has led them to showcase at music
festivals like NXNE, Canadian Music Week, Indie Week, Kaleidoscope and Spirits of the Earth Festival along with two tours of Eastern Canada.

On stage, 5th PROJEKT is a 4-piece featuring Rice (vocals, guitar) and
McNalty (guitars) accompanied by Peter Broadley (bass) and Jeremy Oram (drums).
